Position: Internal Audit

Based in Addis Ababa, the incumbent will serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Tesfa Micro Finance Institution (TMFI) reporting to its Chair of the Board of Directors. He/she will oversee the overall management of the institution, including providing clear leadership and direction to the institution, ensuring solid operating and financial performance, recruiting, and developing the talent needed to accomplish high performance standards and overseeing new operational systems and procedures. He/she will have primary responsibility for achieving the ambitious growth strategy developed by the stakeholders, and for positioning the MFI as a leading provider of high-quality financial services to the poor. 

Organisational Background:

Tesfa Micro Finance S.C. (TMFI) was established by the Ethiopian Kale Heywot Church (EKHC) under the legal ground set by the licensing and supervision of the business of Micro Financing institutions proclamation No. 40/1996 in 2008 being registered with the NBE as the 30th MFI. The EKHC, the major shareholder of the institution, has more than 10 million members and 10 thousand local churches across the country and it registered and evidenced a very high reputation as a household name for more than seventy years for its immense contribution to the poverty alleviation and development effort of the country.

Recognizing that economic growth and development of the rural and urban small-scale production and services depends on the availability and access to finance, the EKHC established the Tesfa MFI with the vision of reaching the marginalized and low-income rural and urban entrepreneurs who are willing to work and change their lives. Over the coming five years, with a support from its owner, the institution aims to expand its outreach to clients with a range of products, including a wider array of loan products, savings, and various nonfinancial products, expanding its reach throughout the country.

TMFI is currently looking for energetic, dynamic and self-starter microfinance leader who is visionary and change agent to transform the lives of the low-level income and diverse urban and rural community groups through efficient and effective provision of microfinance services to join our team based at the head office in Addis Ababa.

Position: General Manager

Role Summary:

He/she will oversee the overall management of the institution, including providing clear leadership and direction to the institution, ensuring solid operating and financial performance, recruiting, and developing the talent needed to accomplish high performance standards and overseeing new operational systems and procedures. He/she will have primary responsibility for achieving the ambitious growth strategy developed by the stakeholders, and for positioning the MFI as a leading provider of high-quality financial services to the poor. This will include assuming leadership in four key areas:

  1. Overall management and governance.
  2. Strategic planning and business development.
  3. Human resource and talent development; and
  4. Communications and external stakeholder relations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Overall Management and Governance:
  • Serve as ex officio non-voting member of Board of Directors.
  • Execute the policy decisions of the Board.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the institution by providing clear leadership and guidance to all functions of the institution, including Finance, Operations, Administration, Special Projects, HR,and IT.
  • Cultivate culture of cooperation and high performance.
  • Drive organizational performance, both quantitative and qualitative; achieve business plan targets.
  • Ensure effective collaboration with EKHC head office and Ketena leadership team to ensure effective alignment of the TMFI mission and vison to reach the poor and needy members in the community.
  • Uphold standards of risk management at all levels and ensure effective supervisory control and management review; and
  • Sustain the institution’s social mission and its dedication to financial inclusion.
  1. Strategic Planning and Business Development:
  • Develop annual and longer-term plans and budgets, incorporating input from the different departments for approval by the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the implementation of budgets and strategic plans, including oversight of fundraising.
  • Set financial and operational performance targets for all key operating units.
  • Set employee performance standards required to achieve short- and long-term objectives and goals
  • Lead the TMFI’s expansion into new geographic areas of Ethiopia as deemed necessary.
  1. Human Resource and Talent Development:
  • Build a strong and effective senior management team.
  • Establish an effective and competent participatory management style.
  • Implement performance management system for senior management team.
  • Oversee and support the development and implementation of effective HR policies and procedures for recruitment, training, and talent development.
  • Motivate all staff and ensure that staff is dedicated to the mission of the MFI; and
  • Mentor and coach senior management.
  1. Communications and External Stakeholder Relations:
  • Build the MFI’s reputation as a company committed to excellent client services, both internally and externally.
  • Maintain solid relations with shareholders and external parties, including the NBE, the Government of Ethiopia, investors, and other business partners.
  • Ensure quality information flow to investors, regulators, and other stakeholders as relevant.

Qualifications :

Qualifications:- A bachelor’s degree is required, and master’s degree is desired in Accounting, Economics, Management, Business Administration, Cooperatives Management, or related social science fields of study. 

Professional Work Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience in management and or 5 years leadership experience in the financial sector, at least 3-5 of which should have been in senior management positions in financial institutions, MFIs, banks, or similar financial services company as per the requirements of the National Bank of Ethiopia.

Required knowledge, skills, and capabilities

  • General knowledge of a wide range of micro finance and banking products, including loans and savings.
  • Advanced knowledge of microfinance services such as saving and credit management, banking products and services as well as knowledge of standard and Ethiopian National Bank directives; microfinance and banking compliance regulations, banking law, business law, employment and labour law, internal operational policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading and building cohesive, high performing teams.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to delegate effectively amongst teams and show commitment to the long-term development of the management team through coaching and mentoring.
  • Comfortable in a fluid environment, self-directed, flexible, and creative.
  • Commitment to the institution’s vision, mission, and corporate values.
  • Fluency in Amharic is required and fluency in English is desirable.
  • Willingness to follow and apply EKHC values in his/her day-to-day activities.
